Lodge is a fantastic base for exploring many of the must see sites and attractions on Skye and and the west coast including Plockton, Eilean Donan Castle and Skye of course. We are often asked by visitors to the area what day trips we would recommend. Well here are some suggestions.
Day Trips from Stationmaster’s Lodge The Isle of Skye You can be on Skye, over the bridge, within 20 minutes’ drive from the house and at Portree, the island capital, within an hour or so. Skye is the largest of the Inner Hebrides lying off the west coast of Scotland, with a distinctly Highland feel. There is stunning mountain scenery, dramatic sea lochs, incredible geology and an abundance of wildlife. Take in the stunning mountain scenery of the Cuillins, explore Portree, and enjoy a seafood lunch. Indulge in a distillery tour at Talisker, or head to the wild, wild north and the dramatic Quirang mountains (made famous by the BFG and Stardust movies). The Fairy Glen is special too.The Three Chimney’s Restaurant is a culinary destination in its own right. Discover Skye on a Guided Tour Take the hassle out of exploring without missing a thing! So, why not enjoy a guided tour of Skye with our friend Bill? Tours leave from Portree (Isle of Skye, approx 60 mins’ drive from the Lodge). Enjoy a unique experience on a small group tour with a guide who knows all the best spots. You can sit back and see the very best of Skye in one amazing day, while someone else drives for a change. For more info see Munching fresh seafood If you love fresh seafood, then head down to Kyle (15 mins’ drive) where you can enjoy amazing lunches at the Waterside restaurant (on the station platform), which is owned by a local fisherman and his family. Much of the seafood comes from Loch Carron and is fished fresh for the restaurant. Pottering in Plockton Explore nearby Plockton, one of the most scenic villages in Scotland, complete with palm trees! Go for a boat trip, enjoy a few beers, lunch or just enjoy a walk along the coast. Messing about on the water For information on local boat cruises from Plockton look up: www.plockton.com/what-to-do/boat-trips/ Or how about a day or half day sea kayaking? http://www.plockton.com/what-to-do/sea-kayaking/ Tramping a local walk Get your boots on and enjoy a day’s walking. There are loads of good walking suggestions in the folder in the cottage. For serious hillwalkers, you could head over to Skye and tackle the mighty Cuillins, or perhaps you fancy the Five Sisters of Kintail? Snapping Eilean Donan Castle Explore nearby Eileen Donan Castle, the most photographed castle in Scotland. This iconic castle is only a short drive away. The advantage of being so close is that you can go early in the morning or in the early evening, when the tourist hoards depart! Driving the North Coast 500 Take a drive along North Coast 500 route and take in some of that spectacular west coast scenery. You can pick up the route just north of the Lodge. The Kishorn Seafood Bar is well worth a lunch stop! Relaxing by the loch You’re on holiday! Just chill out. Enjoy a BBQ with a glass of something cold in the lochside garden, soaking up the views, Or if the weather is wild, settle down with a good book and a wee dram to relax by the roaring fire. Watching the weather come and go across the loch, who needs the telly?
